Sightings are never guaranteed
Whales are wild animals and move freely, so no trip can promise a sighting. Calm, clear mornings in the main season give you the best chance.
Tips for a good trip
- Book for an early start — the sea is usually calmest in the morning
- If you get seasick, ask a pharmacist about tablets and take them before you board
- Bring sunscreen, a hat, water and a light layer for the breeze
- Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance and doesn't chase the whales
- Stay the night before in Mirissa or Weligama, or leave Galle very early
Getting there from Galle
Boats leave early, so public buses are rarely practical. A private car is the easiest option: your driver picks you up before dawn, waits while you're at sea, and takes you back — or on to your next stop.
