Quick facts
| Distance | About 150 km by road |
|---|---|
| Private transfer | About 2–2.5 hours via the expressways |
| Train | Airport to Colombo first, then about 2.5–3 hours by train to Galle |
| Bus | Usually the cheapest, but with changes and luggage it's the slowest and least comfortable |
Option 1: Private transfer or taxi
The easiest choice after a long flight. Your driver meets you at arrivals and drives straight to your hotel using the highways around Colombo and the Southern Expressway, so there's no need to change between vehicles with your luggage.
It's also the best option for families, groups and late-night arrivals. The price is for the whole vehicle, so it can be good value when shared.
Option 2: Train
The coastal railway from Colombo Fort to Galle is scenic and inexpensive. But you first need to travel from the airport into Colombo, and trains can be crowded, with limited luggage space. It suits light travellers who arrive during the day and want the experience.
Option 3: Bus
Public buses run between Colombo and Galle, including faster expressway services. They're very cheap, but expect a change, little luggage space and some waiting — not ideal straight off a flight.
Tips for arriving travellers
- Send your flight number so your driver can allow for delays
- Get some Sri Lankan rupees at the airport for small purchases on the way
- If you land at night, a pre-booked transfer avoids looking for a taxi when you're tired
- Going further south? Unawatuna, Mirissa and Hiriketiya are an easy extension of the same route
